Well thought that cos Tuesday had been so late could at least get away early on Wednesday, but wasn't to be as got cornered by Thandi wanting Extra Math help, and for that I will gladly give up some moments of freedom. It is truly amazing when someone acknowledges that asking for help is a valuable way of learning, oops I better take my own advice. Well payday is in a week and then I will join a club and ask as much as possible.
Need bait desperately, Low tide is in the afternoon now within reach of my own timetable. Loaded prawn pump in the car and set off for MBerg to pump some worm in the corners, set up my Rod and the first worm came quickly so rigged up the line waded in almost to the surfers and gave a rubbish cast. Wearing a wetsuit is certainly helpful in a place like Muizenberg with it's gently sloping beach, at least 150 m is needed to get to any depth, left the rod on the stand and carried on pumping, watching every now and then for any movement. Need a strike indicator of some sort as when I am reasonably far away , in the crashing surf trying to get some bait I'm sure I wont be able to hear the drag.
Suddenly I look up and the end of my rod is shaking, little surge of excitement, that is soon quelled as I look along the line to notice a Oyster catcher stuck in the line about 20 m from the tip, run to the beach and put the pump and net down, go back to the struggling bird slowly this time making what I think must be calming noises , but probably sound like a demented cat to the poor Oyster Catcher. Reach for both sides of the line ready to bit it off to enable the bird to get away, and as I do that it manages to free itself, thank God, catching Red data Book birds is not high on my agenda. Silly birds, with there penchance to fly into things and there need to nest on the ground one can understand why they are in line for a Darwin Award. It seems that Dusk is the worst time for this as the birds just are more susceptible to not seeing the line at that time.
Got some great Worm in the surf, but no real bites, was using a smaller no 2 hook , in the hope that something would swallow every thing, but no joy. Lighter trace line I think, at least Try for Steenbrass, You can still bring them in on a light line, and no rocks mean no snags, well live and learn.
Tried further along later on, but still nothing well tomorrow is another day, a tough day full of School stuff, and a blasted Talent show in the evening that has a compulsory attendance.
