Back to Sonwabe for a first cast at 5:45 pm into a pushing tide . Conditions looked perfect, small swell, warm westerly, beautiful calm sunrise. Had the right bait, blood- worm, two rods set up and .........nothing.
Right time , not right place, or rather not whilst i was there. Left at 7:30. One little zzzrrrzzz on a quite shallow cast that got my adrenaline flowing and my heart pumping as i carefully lifted the rod, no frantic strike this time, calm, calm, wait, come on fish take it, bite damn you. Everything stops, time moves on the outside, not in my bubble, i can feel my heart slowly thumping, senses heightened fingers feeling for the slightest pressure, there! Strike, damn miss.
Oh well check the bait cast out again, at least there is the comfort that there is at least one fish somewhere near me.
Spoke to a guy leaving as i arrived, he had to go to a dart competition, you get the feeling he wanted to stay, after all sunset is when it is all supposed to happen. He had been fishing since 12 pm and between him and a friend not one pick up.
Spoke to another guy who wanted to know where i had pumped the worm, he spoke of a good steenbras comming out on Friday around sunset. So that makes one on friday and 4 on Saturday that i know about. Well it has to be my turn sometime doesn't it, well doesn't it.
Am going to try and use a long hook trace next time to give some movement to the bait and some slack for the fish to pick up and run. Maybe a whole bunch of strong small hooks in sort of a hair trace, like they use for the large carp, if you can land a 20 kilo carp on a no 4 hook with a hair trace then maybe it will work for Steenbras. Well lots of time to practice.
But hey i am feeling quite chuffed with myself, 20 days down. 345 to go, still room for some fish.
Tommorrow a first for me for day 21, Wireless road Kommetjie.
